ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Thomas Palings, and I am a photographer from the Netherlands with a love for analog photography. I've been working in the industry for over 10 year

I started my journey in photography around the age of 17 and after high-school I started my studie in media design with the specialization towards video. I bought a Nikon D90, the first DSLR that was able to shoot video next to being a great stills camera. I saw the potential of digital camera’s to do both, and was one of the first people to use the Canon 5D for its video capabilities. A couple of years later when I got my Associate’s Degree in Audiovisual Communications I started my study Bachelor’s Degree Photography in Antwerp. After living in Belgium for a couple of years I found my way back to the Netherlands and got a job at DSPH in Breda.

My first camera was an analog Nikon given to me by my parents to make my first assignments for school. This is when I found my love for photography and I bought my first digital camera a couple of years later. Started with analog photography I missed the use of film so I got my first Leica, a camera from 1937 that still worked her fine. I’ve learned to self develop film at home because all the local film labs where closing down. Now I develop and scan all my film at home, shooting both color and black&white film. After more than a decade I have used several cameras and narrowed it down to my two favorite cameras, a Leica and Hasselblad. With these two cameras I do all my personal work. Mechanical camera’s are joy to use, it is a different experience than shooting digital, and a nice way to slow down from my professional work.
